20 January 2025
Among the multiple efforts deployed by the Ministry of Culture to enrich the Egyptian creative scene, the Cairo Opera House, under the supervision of Dr. Lamia Zayed, presents for the first time its new production of Puccini’s one-act operas “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi” at the Main Hall 23, 24, 26 and 27 January 2025 at 8 p.m.
The two operas are performed by the Cairo Opera Company and the Cairo Opera Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Ahmed Farag, and are directed by Mahdy El Sayed, with costume design by Hala Mahmoud, lighting design by Ahmed El Masry, and set design and graphics by Abdel Moneim El Masry.
Suor Angelica is a tragic one-act opera that tells the story of a young nun named Angelica whose tranquil life in the convent is shattered by a painful revelation about her past, leading her on a journey of love, loss, and spiritual redemption.
In contrast, Gianni Schicchi is a comic one-act opera that revolves around the cunning and humorous schemes of Gianni Schicchi, who deceives a greedy family fighting over an inheritance, offering a mix of laughter and sharp critique of human greed.
