The Cairo Opera House, under the supervision of Dr. Lamiaa Zayed, is hosting a concert by the marimba star, Nesma Abdel Aziz, and her group at the Open Air Theatre on Sunday, 3 November 2024 at 8 p.m.
The concert’s program features a wide selection of famous Arab and Western music pieces adapted for the marimba.
The ensemble includes: Mohamed Essam and Sherif Salah (piano), Mostafa Saeed (saxophone and clarinet), Noha Samy (oboe), Amir Ibrahim (trombone), Ali El Hariry and Waleed Gabr (trumpet), Yehia Ramadan (qanun), Ramzy Helim (accordion), Hany El Sawaf (percussion), Marwan El Sawaf (percussion), Majed El Sawaf (cajon and darbuka), Mohamed Arafa (conga and percussion), Gamal Alaa (drums), Ahmed Anwar (guitar), Rayes Karam and Hamdy El Araby (Saidi singing and music).
Nesma Abdel Aziz started her musical studies at the age of 12 and obtained her B.A. from the Cairo Conservatoire with honors in 1997. In 2014, she got her PhD in Arts.
Nesma Abdel Aziz’s Group was established in 2000 and aims to present a new type of music which combines classical music, modern music, jazz, and international music in addition to Arab music with and thus creates a new musical pattern that depends on mixing between Western and Arab instruments and to present it in a contemporary context that is compatible with marimba and percussion.
Audiences and critics call her "Princess of Percussion" due to her extraordinary talent as a percussionist.
