Saroukhan Birth Anniversary at the Opera Cultural Salon

The Cairo Opera House, under the supervision of Dr. Khaled Dagher, is celebrating the birth anniversary of the renowned cartoonist and caricaturist Saroukhan. On this occasion, a cultural salon is held in collaboration with the Abdullah Al-Sawy Foundation for the Preservation of Egyptian Caricature Heritage, the Armenian Charitable Association in Cairo, and Saroukhan’s family at the Small Hall on Sunday, 28 January 2024 at 6 p.m.
The event is attended by researcher and writer Abdullah Al-Sawy, Dr. George Nubar and Sylvia Nardin (Saroukhan’s granddaughter) and includes an artistic interlude during which the Dziadzan Choir and the Armenian Folk Ensemble “Zankezour”.present their performances accompanied by an exhibition of Saroukhan’s caricatures and paintings.
Alexander Saroukhan is an Egyptian-Armenian artist and one of the most important pioneers of caricature in modern times. Through his artwork, he depicted and portrayed the sufferings caused by the British occupation of Egypt. For example, he created the famous imaginary character Al-Masri Afandi to represent the struggle of Egyptian people for their rights, freedom, and independence. His works were published in many important journalistic publications.
